Cover 2 Defense: Safeties

The cover 2 defense has a couple of nuances that are specific to only it. And the safety position is one of those nuances. There are two ways that you can go with it

If you havent read yet: Cover 2 Defense: Cornerbacks

Speed Defensive Back
Speed defensive backs at the safety position would be defensive backs that have very good speed. They could be true safeties or corners, it doesn't matter.

The idea is that you will have better personnel to protect the deep ball. Also usually these  players will be better in coverage.

DO NOT SACRIFICE ZONE COVERAGE RATING FOR SPEED!!!!

But you will have reliable deep ball protection. (they wont cover 4 deep routes at the same time OBVIOUSLY...they can only cover 1 man each) and they will have better deep ball range.

A negative would be their effectiveness in run support. But at the same time these guys are last to the fight anyway so you could get away with it

Run Support Help
The run support safety is pretty much what you have already. The thinking behind having these guys is that since they are the last guys to interact in run support that the better they are at it the more of an asset they are to you.

Now that is not bad thinking at all. In fact you could pair it up with your "Safety- Corner Backs" and have a pretty aggressive run defense personnel.

Now a downside to having these "safeties" on the field is that you could be at risk to getting beat deep. But you will have more aggressive run support, your choice.
